Isle of Man Sport Podcast

 

Launched in May 2019 the Isle of Man Sport Podcast is a series of informative and entertaining discussions covering a wide variety of sporting themes.  Guests include local sports people, coaches and administrators as well as visiting experts from further afield. 

Our inaugural episode welcomed Professor of Psychology, Author and Sports Coaching Consultant Damian Hughes, setting the bar really high from the beginning.

Episode #5 - Women in Coaching

Isle of Man Sport catches up with four fantastic women coaches to find out about their journey through sport and into coaching.

The ladies explore their thoughts on coaching philosophy, CPD and people who inspire them to coach.

Episode #6 - Mentoring in Coaching 

Coaching Coordinator Trevor Christian catches up with local coach mentors Andy Fox (Athletics) and Juan Watney (Football) to find out what mentoring is all about, how it works and why they do it.

Mentoring has been around for a long time but presently more and more formal schemes and initiatives are taking place to help support and develop coaches.

Episode #3 - Dr Kate Hays

July 2019

In this episode Trevor Christian talks to Dr Kate Hays, Head of Psychology with the English Institute of Sport.

Kate shares her thoughts on performance psychology and how it plays an integral part of the coaching process.

Sports Psychology is often seen as a reactive problem solving profession, but Kate explains how modern performance psychology is a proactive service which is essential in preparing athletes to thrive in competitive environments.

Episode #4 - Andy Varnom

In this episode, we welcome Andy Varnom the General Secretary of the International Island Games Association.

Andy shares with us his insights into the scope of the island games and the importance it plays in the sporting landscape for its member islands, from providing a stepping stone in preparation for Commonwealth Games to the legacy of improved facilities and the bringing together of diverse cultures from across the globe.

Episode #1 - Prof Damian Hughes

Professor of Organisational Psychology and Change, Damian Hughes is also a successful consultant to sports and business organisations as well as a best selling author. 

Damian chats with Trevor Christian about the importance an effective culture plays in the success of sports organisations and how getting it wrong can have disastrous consequences. 

Damian takes questions from members of the Isle of Man Sport Coaches Forum in this relaxed and entertaining interview.

Episode #2 - Phil Cringle

June 2019

Local Lad, IOM Sport Aid Recipient and Professional Rugby Player Phil Cringle is guest on this episode of the Isle of Man Sport Podcast.

Phil started his rugby journey at Castle Rushen High School and Douglas Rugby club before moving to the adjacent Isle to progress his playing at Kirkham Grammar School.

Phil went on to represent Scotland at U20 in World Cup and 6 Nations after which he cut his teeth in the professional game with the French second Division outfit Carcassonne.

Phil is now about to embark on his fourth season with London Scottish in the second tier of the English league system and has racked up over 50 appearances.
