Funding & Support for Sport
Isle of Man Sport provides funding and support to help governing bodies develop, grow and improve their sport.
Funding is delivered through a structured process, supported by guidance, resources and ongoing collaboration. This page explains how it works, how funding is allocated, and where to find key documents.
How funding works
Funding and support are delivered through the Support for Sport framework, which is the main way Isle of Man Sport works with governing bodies.
This framework combines planning, funding and ongoing support to help sports develop in line with shared priorities.
- Annual planning and review process (including Your Sport Review and Priorities & Objectives)
- Funding aligned to agreed priorities for each sport
- Ongoing liaison and support from Isle of Man Sport
- Opportunity to share best practice and learn from other sports
- Access to workshops, guidance and development support
For governing bodies that require additional support, the Sports Liaison Officer provides direct guidance and assistance.
The Support for Sport process
Each year, governing bodies engage in a structured cycle through the Support for Sport framework.
- Your Sport Review – provides data and insight on your sport
- Priorities & Objectives (P&Os) – sets out your development plans
- Review and engagement process with Isle of Man Sport
- Ongoing monitoring and support
For example, sports are required to complete the Your Sport Review between December and January to inform planning and funding decisions.
Funding priorities
Funding is directed towards initiatives that deliver impact across the Island.
Key priority areas include:
- Increasing participation in sport across all levels
- Supporting underrepresented groups to get involved in sport
- Improving standards in coaching, officiating and volunteering
- Strengthening governance and sustainability of sports
- Supporting participation in recognised competitions and pathways
These priorities guide both funding decisions and how sports plan their development.
Funding allocations
Funding is allocated each year to recognised sports based on priorities, needs and available resources. These allocations are published to ensure transparency and clarity.
Funding includes contributions from multiple programmes, including Support for Sport and Sports‑Specific Development Officers.
Over recent years, funding levels have been influenced by:
- Increased investment following Covid‑19 to support recovery
- A growing number of recognised sports on the Island
- Overall funding remaining broadly static
This means that, while total investment has remained steady, funding per sport has reduced over time and is expected to continue to adjust in line with demand.
What funding supports
Funding is prioritised towards initiatives that deliver clear impact across Island sport. These include:
-
Increasing participation and improving participant experience
(e.g. equipment, small‑scale facility improvements up to £5,000) -
Supporting underrepresented groups (including women and girls)
to get involved in sport as participants, coaches, officials or volunteers -
Improving the standard of coaching, officiating and volunteering
(including travel for qualifications, courses and CPD) -
Strengthening governance within governing bodies and clubs
Competition and pathway support
Funding is also available to support participation in recognised competitions and development pathways.
This includes support for:
-
Senior athletes and teams competing at recognised international level, representing the Isle of Man (or Home Nations / Great Britain)
-
Talent pathway and development activity, including:
- National Governing Body programmes
- Relevant competitions
-
Junior athletes (under 18) competing at recognised level
All competition and pathway activity must be sanctioned by the relevant National or International Governing Body.
Guidance & documents
A range of documents support the Support for Sport process and funding arrangements.
These should be reviewed carefully as part of planning and application.
